HARD OR SOFT ?
We are often asked which is better - lightweight suitcases with "hard"
shells moulded in rigid plastic or lightweight suitcases made from "soft"
fabric on a resilient frame ? When we started selling luggage in our
retail store more than 25 years ago our answer would have been that
we were finding that the rigid moulded cases tended to stand up better
to the rigours of baggage handling. Nowadays, however, designs.
materials and manufacturing technology have progressed enormously
and both “hard” and “soft” lightweight suitcases can offer comparable
overall strength, durability and resistance to abuse. However, some
of the high-gloss mouldings will obviously be liable to scratching and
even the toughest fabrics can be scuffed or snagged, although they are
usually virtually impossible to tear. Generally, “hard” and “soft” can be
equally effective in safely carrying whatever you pack in them. And its
significant that some of the new ultra – light lightweight suitcases have
a “hybrid” construction combining both rigid moulding and flexible fabric.

WHAT ABOUT LOCKS ?
Lightweight suitcases with rigid, hinged frames and integral locks are
inherently sturdier than lightweight suitcases with zip closure secured by
fixed lock or separate padlock. Even so, historic problems with zips
jamming and splitting have now been largely eliminated and the zip
closures on today’s lightweight suitcases are usually trouble – free with
some innovations being “self – healing” and virtually tamper – proof.
